Malivoire Ladybug Rosé ’09

The clear, medium intense, pinkish hue of the wine reminded me of raw salmon. The scent of strawberry and rhubarb was pleasant enough but not terribly evocative. This extra dry rosé provided an agreeable tang but not a whole lot of fruit.

Cave Spring Riesling CSV ’08 Estate Bottled

It’s a clear lemon – gold colour with a tinge of green. Bold lemon and lime aromas lead the way to brilliant fruit flavours, (lemon & lime again). Wet stone is there too, supported by a blast of fresh acidity. Fruit and acidity are prominent right through to the end of the medium length finish. It is a gorgeous, mouth watering, light to medium bodied wine absolutely right for a hot afternoon.

Marques de Casa Concho Cabernet Sauvignon ’07 Concho y Toro

A clear deep ruby core fades to a progressively lighter rim. A cornucopia of aromas greet the nose; cedar, tangerine, maple syrup, black fruit and a hint of something floral. The wine is dry but the fruit expression is sweet. No contradiction here, the wine was made from beautifully ripe grapes. Very good replays on the palate. Fine grained tannins and a medium level of acidity contribute to an exquisitely balanced wine. The medium length finish is fruity and sweet.

Bougrier Vouvray ’09 Loire

To the eye it is a clear lemony green with quick tears. On the nose there is pear, minerality and a light candied note reminiscent of lemon drops. As on the nose so on the palate. This light bodied off dry wine is nicely balanced by supporting acidity. The finish is crisp juicy and lemony. Voulez-vous Vouvray? Sadly, I’m never asked.

Quindals Emporada ’06

Made from organic grapes, unfiltered. A profoundly dark brick colour gives way to a light rim. Perfumed dark berry fruit, a hint of spice, cool earth and oak emerge from the glass. Taste buds confirm the nose. The fruit is juicy and the oak, sandelwood? is present. Tannins are slightly dusty on this light to medium bodied wine. The length corresponds to the body, (harmony, what!). Pairs well with burgers, sausages off the bar bq.

Gran Coronas Cabernet Sauvignon ’07 Penedes

A blend of 85% cab and 15% tempranillo. This clear ruby red sheets the glass releasing aromas of pure red and black berry fruit, oak and bread dough.  A juicy dry wine of some intensity, its fine tannins are nicely integrated. The finish is fruity and it ends all too quickly. At its best in the backyard.

Vinahonda Crianza Jumila ’06

The blend is made up of monastrell 60%, cabernet sauvignon 30%, tempranillo 10%. The colour is a beautiful clear dark blood with a purple core. A quick swirl sheets the glass and gives way to tears. Intense aromas of oak, dark berry fruit and earth waft from the glass. This wine announces itself. It is dry and nearly full bodied. Then things changed, in the mouth it was dusty and, for lack of a better word, flat. With the passage of time things changed again, this time to gorgeous juicy dark berry fruit. Medium length with a sweet herbal note on the finish.

Marquis Phillips McLaren Vale Shiraz ’08

It’s a clear, yet opaque deep ruby, an authentic Australian. The nose offers smoked meat, dairy and black fruit compote that is as ripe as hell. Dry but the fruit expression is sweet. It is a full bodied wine. The abv is 16% and that really plumps it up. In terms of texture; round and full, soft even. It ends with a medium length finish that is dominated by tannins and alcohol. A beast from down under.
